BRAZILIAN ORGANISATIONS CAMPAIGN FOR DILMA TO VETO THE FOREST CODE BILL

-

The petition says:

President Dilma,

veta_dilmaI am very concerned to see that Amazonia is once more under threat. After years of reduced deforestation, the forest has again become pray to the power-saws and tractors, and with it the weakened rural populations who are victims of violence.

I see that this is connected with the proposal to change the Forest Code. This text leaves the way clear for more deforestation and amnesties those who have committed crimes in the past. We know that it is possible to double our food production without the need for more deforestation. I do not want this law to come into force and it is not what I expect of the President. In the election campaign you promised that you would not let a text like this be approved.

A forest preserved is important for biodiversity, for the survival of the populations that depend on it, for the family farms that produce my food and for the other producers who need its environmental services. The forest is essential to control global warming, and the Brazil that you govern has taken on an international commitment to reduce greenhouse gases. I want to see that fulfilled.

It is in your hands to decide whether the new law goes ahead or whether your promises – to me and other voters – will really be kept.

Please veto the Forest Code bill. You can save the Amazon and the other Brazilian forests from destruction.

By Friday 27 April the petition had received almost 33,000 signatures. To add your signature, ciick here.

Avaaz has also started a petition, which already has over 1.5 million singatures. Sign it here!
