Environmental Activism

Human Rights Weekend 2018: As the world urbanizes and industrializes, and as effects of climate change intensify, environmental crises will increasingly devastate the lives, health, and livelihoods of people around the globe. Activists and ordinary citizens who are defending their rights to land and the environment may face intimidation, legal harassment and deadly violence. During this session, we explore the challenges as well as opportunities involved in environmental activism, both on the international and national level. What can one person do to make a difference? Speakers: Marcos Orellana (Environment and Human Rights Director at Human Rights Watch), Donald Pols (CEO Milieudefensie), Silas Siakor (Human rights and environmental activist) and Laurens de Groot (Nature conserver, co-founder Skycap and ShadowView, author).
